| Tanımı | NURAY EKICIThe Diaspora of the Turks of Bulgaria in TurkeyHistorical BackgroundThere has been more than a century long emigration flow emanating from the Balkans towards Anatolia. Ottoman retreat from the Balkans at the end of 19th and beginning of 20th century left a considerable number of Ottoman-Muslim subjects within the borders of the then newly independent Balkan states. Soon after the subsequent disintegration
of the Ottoman Empire, Turkey – as a successor
state – became the main shelter for the Muslim and/or Turkish communities remained in the Balkans. It was only in the 1990s, due to the prevailing political and economic crisis as well as military conflicts in the Balkans, that Turkey
‘had’ to receive significant number of immigrants from Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia and Bulgaria.
